NIJ Body Armor
A bulletproof vest is a protective garment that absorbs the impact of bullets and shrapnel to the torso from explosions. The vests are made of laminated layers of fiber or synthetic fabric and protect the wearer from bullets fired by gunfire and shrapnel from explosive devices and some hand grenades.
When added to metal plates or ceramic body armor, it can also protect the wearer from bullets fired by a rifle. In combination with metal or extremely dense tissue layers, the vest provides users with some protection against a knife attack.
